Highlights of August 27 Meeting

President Connie Bunyard opened the meeting, and John Bunyard led the Rotary Four-Way Test. Today’s guests included a tax professional named Don and a prospective new member Robin.

Steve Ross won today’s raffle. However, he did not draw the Ace of Clubs, so the large pot carries over.

  • Harry Grossman was happy that his daughter is coming to visit him on Labor Day weekend

  • Captain John Birks was happy that he renewed his child safety training
  • Donna Goetzenberger was happy to have gone to Big Bear with the Rotary Youth Exchange students and that her daughter Page is starting her master’s at a university in the Netherlands
  • Melody Jackson was happy to be back from her Greece trip
  • Andy Bradford was happy to be back from vacation

Today’s speaker was Mary Elliott, the Regional Director for South Asia for She is Safe Free & Equipped. She Is Safe prevents, rescues, and restores women and girls from abuse and slavery in high-risk communities around the world. Mary first provided an update regarding the flooding tragedy that happened this week. She is Safe was founded by a trafficking survivor in 2002 and works with in-country partners. There are many forms of trafficking with forced labor being the most common. Also, trafficking includes forced sexual exploitation of adults or minors, forced marriage and organ trafficking. She is Safe helps get people out of trafficking situations, helps them to re-enter society, and learns the skills to work or start a business.
